Introducing the Actual “Murder Hornet”

The Asian giant hornet is the “murder hornet” and they are rarely spotted, actually. Eighty percent of calls received at a university entomology department has been about the cicada killer wasps instead of the alleged “murder hornets”.

The Asian giant hornet is only native to Japan and South Korea. Though many scares have been had, only a few have been found in parts of British Columbia, Canada as well as the very northwestern corner of Washington state.

There have been no confirmed reports in any locations around the United States. Minnesotans and Wisconsonians rejoice, though we have our fair share of terrible stinging insects.

These Asian giant hornets, are, quite possibly, the most terrifying stinging insect. They are the world’s largest known hornet at up to 2 inches in length. Its head is often wider than its shoulders, though it is at least as wide as its shoulders, where its wings are mounted. It is bright orange or yellow, depending on the variety.

The thorax and antennae are dark brown. Its waist, like other wasps, is pinched and smooth portraying its brown and orange stripes throughout its abdomen. And, of course, at up to 2 inches long, this guy can pack a powerful sting. No wonder they were nick-named the “murder hornet.”

While most wasps and hornets are pollinators themselves, the Asian giant hornet can destroy populations of honey bees. For this reason, they are more than a nuisance, as honey bee populations are essential to life on Earth. It is important to have a wasp removal company handy for situations like these, or any situation where wasps are dangerous to your family’s health and well-being.

Cicada Killer Wasps: A Similar Wasp that may Pose as Suspect

Cicada killer wasps are most commonly mistaken for “murder hornets,” perhaps due to their large size. Most are only 1 to 1.5 inches in length, versus the up-to 2-inch long Asian giant hornet. The most distinguishable difference is the head, which is typically narrower than its shoulders. And unlike the Asian giant hornet, the Cicada Killer Wasp’s head and thorax are typically the same color.

Because the Cicada Killer Wasp is a wasp, it also has a pinched waist. But another distinguishable difference between the two is that this wasp has jagged stripes that can appear like mountains on its abdomen.

Cicada killers are solitary so they don’t attack in groups. They rarely attack, though males can be territorial. They like sandy soil and are known to be excellent diggers, making their nests in the ground.

Ground hornet control and ground wasp control is incredibly important because these pests are often more aggressive and can easily attack you seemingly out of nowhere. It is important to know what to do when you find ground hornets! And it is important to have a ground wasp removal company handy, like Done Right Pest Solutions.
