The Asian giant hornet is the “murder hornet” and they are rarely spotted, actually. Eighty percent of calls received at a university entomology department has been about the cicada killer wasps instead of the alleged “murder hornets”.
The Asian giant hornet is only native to Japan and South Korea. Though many scares have been had, only a few have been found in parts of British Columbia, Canada as well as the very northwestern corner of Washington state.

Cicada killers are solitary so they don’t attack in groups. They rarely attack, though males can be territorial. They like sandy soil and are known to be excellent diggers, making their nests in the ground.
